Story
As always with Lancia, the design of this car is special, particularly as it was the last model produced in collaboration with Vittorio Jano.
Its 2.5-litre V6 engine produced 115 bhp and to improve the weight distribution, the gearbox was mounted with the rear transaxle.
In coupé form, the Aurelia B20 asserted its driving qualities incontrovertibly by winning the most prestigious rallying events, including the Liège-Rome-Liège, Targa Florio and the Monte-Carlo.
The open B24 Spider America version appeared in 1955. It was very expensive, costing twice as much as a Jaguar XK 140, and was not as successful as anticipated.
The following year Lancia replaced it with the Convertible, with the same sublime styling, penned by Francesco Martinengo for Pininfarina, but with a better level of equipment.
Boasting roll-up windows and a waterproof hood, the Aurelia B24 finally fulfilled its status as a highly luxurious cabriolet.
Adding to its refinement is the rarity of this model, since only 521 of them were manufactured.
The model presented here was built in 1958, the final year of production of the B24S convertible.
It was first registered on 17 October 1958.
Its previous owner bought it with a view to restoring it, but after starting the work at Tecnica Auto in Paris, he sold the car in 2010.
The same workshop then completed the work which had been carried out until 2013.
The results are of exceptional quality. The body was completely restored, as can be seen from a comprehensive set of photographs, and is finished in an elegant shade of midnight blue.
The panels are perfectly aligned and the paintwork is to the highest standard.
The dark red leather upholstery was completely restored by the book, as was the black alpaca hood.
Naturally, all the running gear, mechanical and electrical components received the same attention.
The chrome too is in perfect condition. This magnificent car has covered barely 6.200 km since this extensive restoration.
On test, the car drove faultlessly, with a responsive engine, its sound enhanced by a stainless-steel exhaust.
We noted that seat belts have been fitted and that a period Blaupunkt radio has been added to the standard equipment.
The Michelin X tyres are in nearly-new condition.
This Lancia Aurelia is among the finest examples that we have seen, and we have no doubt that enthusiasts will appreciate the extent and quality of the work that has been carried out.
