Description
The Mercedes G-Class is a puzzling car—although the original variant remained largely unchanged from its introduction in the 1970s until 2019, with every passing year, it only became a greater, more desirable status symbol. Over time, Mercedes added power and luxury, but for the most part, the design and chassis weren’t all that different from the military vehicle they had been producing for more than 30 years. Models like the G63 AMG and G65 became fixtures in the wealthiest areas of the world, but there was one G-Wagon that stood above them all. In 2017, Mercedes introduced what would stand as the ultimate G, and the only one to be produced in partnership with the Maybach sub-brand. Known as the G650 Landaulet, this stretched, lifted, open-top G-Wagon harkened back to open-top cars of the 1920s and 1930s, with its folding fabric roof starting behind the B-Pillar for the rear seat passengers to enjoy while the driver sits in front of a partition. Mercedes only built 99 examples of the G650, and the starting price to experience the ultimate in opulence was in excess of €749.000.
This 2018 G650 Landaulet was sold new in Switzerland and has been under the care of its first owner ever since. Finished in a stunning shade of Designo Sea Blue Metallic, which is paired to a tan fabric top in the rear and shows just 240 km from new and remains in essentially showroom condition. The G650 was built on the same stretched frame as the G500 4X4 Squared and is fitted with that model’s portal axles, giving the car outstanding ground clearance and true off-road credibility, just in case. The wheelbase has been stretched by 578 mm, giving a true limousine look and spectacular accommodations for the rear passenger compartment. The fabric soft top folds behind the rear passengers at the touch of a button, and neatly folds up in front of the high-mounted spare tire. The wheel arches are filled by massive 22” 5-split-spoke wheels that are a ball-polished finish and are wrapped in a knobby set of Pirelli Scorpion off-road rated tires.
The G650 Landaulet is undoubtedly an imposing figure on the road, but it is most enjoyed on the interior. Designo two-tone Nappa leather covers nearly every surface, a combination of tan and black, with diamond stitching throughout. The front compartment is not all that different from a standard G-Wagon, with a 4-spoke AMG steering wheel, a center console with 3 differential lock settings, and a Command screen in the center. Glossy carbon fiber trim is found throughout the interior, and when you open the door, you are greeted by polished aluminum illuminated kick-plates with Maybach emblazoned across them. But where things get truly interesting is in the rear seats. It is hard to draw a parallel to the rear seats in the car world, looking closer to the cabin of a Gulfstream, than any other car on sale today. A pair of captain’s chairs with multi-way adjustability, thigh rests as well as heating and ventilation provide maximum comfort for those riding in the rear. Each seat has an individual entertainment screen, and they are separated by a large center console with heated and cooled cup holders, a refrigerator, and rear climate control. Historically, cars with a Landaulet top were ridden in by the aristocracy and world leaders who likely would be having conversations that they did not want their driver to hear. If you are riding in the back of this G650 and encounter a similar situation, a glass partition can be raised between the front and rear compartment, and with the touch of a button, will turn from clear to opaque, allowing you to converse in complete privacy.
In an effort to make the G650 Landaulet as extravagant as possible, Mercedes set aside its more common V8s and fitted this vehicle with a 6.0-liter bi-turbo V12 from the G65. Rated at 621 horsepower and 1,000 Newton Meters of torque, this powerplant allows the G650 to accelerate from 0-60 in just 6.0 seconds which is truly remarkable for a vehicle of this size. As this is still at its core, a G-Wagon, it was built with all of the off-road equipment one would expect like full-time 4-wheel-drive and triple-locking differentials. It benefits from a recent complete servicing and is ready to be put into use.
There is no mistaking the G650 Landaulet for being anything other than a truly special vehicle. It is hard to imagine any vehicle having more presence on the road, and the luxury accommodations are absolutely second to none. With only 99 built, this G650 is about as close as you can get to a brand-new example and is offered in a stunning color combination to go along with it. Located in Germany, this car is available for export internationally- please consult an Issimi representative for further details.
